Meet John

John George is an experienced leader with over 40 years of public service in various positions. He has served as the Superintendent of the Warwick School District, Executive Director of the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU), Executive Director of the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU), Director of Special Education for the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit, an administrator for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and Assistant Director for Governmental Relations with the National Association of State Directors of Special Education, based in Washington, D.C. Currently, he is serving as the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units.

Throughout his career, Dr. George has made significant contributions to the improvement of schools and communities. As Superintendent of the Warwick School District, he played a crucial role in resolving a racial controversy that threatened the safety and dignity of many residents in the Lititz community. For his efforts, he received state recognition for developing a comprehensive plan to eradicate bias and hate by creating a school culture that respects and welcomes all individuals.

While retaining his role as Executive Director at the BCIU, he assumed the position of Acting Superintendent of the Reading School District, a role he undertook to lead the district out of financial distress while ensuring it remained under local control rather than being turned over to a private management company. While at MCIU, at the request of the PA Department of Education, he assumed the position of Acting Superintendent of the Harrisburg School District to address and correct serious financial and academic issues.

In his current role, he provides leadership to Pennsylvania’s public, private, and charter schools and intermediate units. He closely collaborates with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Pennsylvania General Assembly on education policy matters. Dr. George played a crucial role in ensuring the continuity of education during the pandemic. Furthermore, he was instrumental in reopening schools by coordinating a state-wide vaccination program for approximately 110,000 teachers.

Dr. George earned his Doctorate and Master of Education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University. He completed postdoctoral studies at Temple University. He has authored several articles and publications, presented testimony to the U.S. Congress, the PA General Assembly, and the PA State Board of Education, and has presented nationally on many issues related to public education. Throughout his career, Dr. George has served on numerous community and education boards.

John was born in the Pittsburgh area and has resided in Lititz since 1998. His parents were welfare recipients who taught him the values of honesty, integrity, hard work, service, and humility.
